In
November 1999, IBMT and St. Francis Hospital
& Health Centers decided to join forces
for the provision of stem cell transplant services.
Meetings between the two parties had been ongoing
for 18 months revealing considerable overlap
in the goals of both organizations.
Both IBMT and
St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers believe
in "high tech - high touch" patient
care, and believe that they complement each
other to further develop a unique patient care
model for stem cell transplant patients.
St. Francis Hospital
& Health Centers is a Catholic Health Care
network comprised of three hospitals and several
off-site service facilities. The various campuses
are less than 15 minutes from downtown Indianapolis,
and are conveniently located very close to North
/ South I-65 and East / West I-70 interstates.
Yet, the hospital is located in a residential
area, which has none of the typical big-city
traffic and crime problems.
For more than
85 years, St. Francis Hospital has served the
south side of the Indianapolis Metropolitan
area as the secondary and tertiary health care
provider of choice.
St. Francis is
known for excellence in oncology, cardiology,
orthopedics, and women's and children's health.
The hospital's strategic plan called for further
expansion of an already first-rate continuum
of oncology services, and partnership with IBMT
became a logical step along this road.
St. Francis
Hospital is committed to the mission of continuing
Christ's healing ministry, and saw this partnership
as an opportunity to provide cancer patients
in Indiana and surrounding states with high-quality
transplant services delivered in a caring, compassionate
manner.
St. Francis Hospital
& Health Centers is a member of The Sisters
of St. Francis Health Services, Inc (SSFHS).
SSFHS owns and operates 10 hospitals in Indiana
and Illinois.
IBMT is a group
medical practice with a significant commitment
to excellence in both patient care and clinical
research. Leukemia and stem cell transplant
patients receive care in a unique manner taking
advantage of the best aspects of both academic
and private settings.
While diligent
efforts are made to ensure that the care provided
remains on the cutting edge of stem cell transplant
technology, patients are directly cared for,
and have immediate access to fully credentialed
physicians at any hour of the day or night.
IBMT
was one of the first four programs in North
America to be accredited by Foundation for the
Accreditation of Hematopoietic Cell Therapy
(FAHCT), the current hallmark for both clinical
and technical excellenece, and continues to
be the only accredited program in the state
of Indiana.
The IBMT providers
are among the pioneers of outpatient stem cell
transplants, and operate a fully equipped transplant
clinic during the day with patients returning
home or to a local hotel at night.
In the new partnership,
St. Francis Hospital and IBMT have agreed upon
a completely new model of collaboration to ensure
fully integrated care, both from a clinical
and insurance point of view. This new model
will allow the seamless movement of patients
between outpatient and inpatient settings, improving
patient convenience and comfort. The hospital
gives the patient access to the full spectrum
of services and resources and all levels of
special care that may be required.

St.
Francis Hospital - Indianapolis is the
home of the Cancer Care Center.

At
the same time, patients and families feel comfortable
being cared for by the same group of nurses
and physicians. The transplant physicians, medical
consultants, and nurses are the most experienced
in the state, and many have been together for
15 years.
The location of
the hospital in a residential area, and an on-site
hotel, the Inn at St. Francis (see photos),
enhance patient convenience and comfort. Payers
benefit by having access to a single organization
for all inpatient and outpatient care, including
care from all medical consultants.
IBMT serves as
a designated and contracted transplant center
for United Resource Network (URN), Humana, Multiplan,
SIHO, and many other insurance companies.
IBMT and St. Francis
Hospital are both committed to continue to develop
their new model to further improve patient care
and comfort, while at the same time being fiscally
responsible. A new integrated outcome database
will greatly facilitate this endeavor.
