Luke Akard, M.D., F.A.C.P.

Dr. Akard is an Indiana native who was trained in hematology/medical oncology and previously held professorships at Indiana University Medical Center. His major field of interest is stem cell biology and transplantation for solid tumors. He serves as the Director of Apheresis for IBMT.

Michael Dugan, M.D.

Dr. Dugan is also an Indiana native who performed his fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of Minnesota with emphasis on bone marrow transplantation. He joined the group in 1995 with an interest in cord blood and ex-vivo stem cell expansion. He heads the Quality Assurance/Management efforts for IBMT.

       

Jan Jansen, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Jansen is an immunologist / hematologist trained in Leiden, The Netherlands and has dedicated his professional life to marrow transplantation since 1976. He is extensively published and was the founder, and director, of a nearby university BMT program until 1989. He serves as the Director of the Stem Cell Laboratory for IBMT.

James Thompson, D.O., F.A.C.P

Dr. Thompson joined IBMT in 1993 following his retirement from the US Air Force in San Antonio where he directed the BMT program for the Department of Defense. He was trained at Stanford and has interests in the lymphomas and Hodgkin's disease. Dr. Thompson is the Director of Clinical Operations for IBMT .

       

Vickie Alfrey, RN, BSN, Transplant Coordinator

Mrs. Alfrey received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Indiana University in 1995. She started working on the inpatient bone marrow transplant/hematology unit in 2000. She found that working with hematology patients was her calling and was very rewarding. In 2006, she took on the role as the transplant coordinator. In this role she facilitates new referrals and walks the patient and family through the process of preparing for transplant. In her spare time she spends time with her husband and three sons.

Stephanie Costley, MSW

Mrs.Costley is one of the newest members to the IBMT team. She attended Purdue University and received a Bachelors Degree in Psychology; she then went on to get her Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan. Although she is new to the Blood and Marrow Transplant experience, she is not new to social work. She has extensive experience in providing counseling and supportive services to adults, children, and families in a variety of settings. She is very knowledgeable about local and national resources to aid transplant and hematology patients. She is working on developing more local support groups and peer connections for IBMT patients and their families across the state of Indiana.

       

Francine Figg, R.N.C.S., Nurse Practitioner

Ms. Figg completed a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing degree in 1982 at Indiana University. She worked as an inpatient bone marrow transplant nurse from 1985-1989. In 1987 she earned a Master's of Science in Nursing degree, and subsequent certification as Adult Nurse Practitioner. Since 1989 she has functioned as IBMT's nurse practitioner. She enjoys spending time with her two girls.

Susan Hanks, M.S., M.T. (ASCP)

Ms. Hanks is the Laboratory Director of The IBMT Stem Cell Transplantation Laboratory. She is a graduate of Indiana University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology in 1980 and a Master of Science in Pathology in 1994. She has worked in Hematology / clinical and research laboratories since 1980, and helped institute the now-routine diagnostic tool of immunophenotyping by flow cytometry. Ms. Hanks established the Stem Cell Transplantation for IBMT in 1989.

       

Jill Leslie, Pharm.D.

Jill is the dedicated bone marrow transplant and oncology pharmacist for IBMT. Jill received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Purdue University in 1999. She completed a residency in infectious disease and critical care and has served as assistant professor at Butler University School of Pharmacy in Indianapolis. Jill is well published and is a tremendous asset to patient care.

Jeff Morgan, R.N., B.S.N.

Jeff manages the Apheresis Program for IBMT and St. Francis Hospital. He is the liaison with the National Marrow Donor Program, coordinating unrelated donor searches and unrelated donor stem cell collections. Jeff also oversees IBMT's photopheresis treatment program. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to IBMT.
